Chinese space station orbital predicts changing of the guard

The Asian giant is not only showing muscle on Earth. The next Chinese launch of the first prototype matches the uncertainty of the U.S. program, the traditional leader of the cosmos.

China is preparing to launch between Thursday and Friday, the first module of a space laboratory, a prototype of a future space station bigger-to coincide with the celebrations surrounding the country's National Day on October 1.

The next step in the Asian giant's space program also coincides with a cyclical time for the U.S. space agency, NASA, which until now has been the power in space for over 40 years.
'But at the same time, I regret that the U.S. falter in its spatial strategy and the political and economic situation does not allow it to continue with his leadership. "
Dr. Rodriguez explained that the Beijing government knows exactly what to do. Not tied to discussions about budgets, has a clear vision and is committed to fund the space program as needed.
New Space Race
In contrast, NASA is going through a difficult period of contraction forced by the government's policy of not being the sole investor in the cost of space missions programs.
'I have mixed feelings, "admits Dr. Pedro Rodriguez, who spent more than three decades with NASA and is now developing, with a private company, applications for new space vehicles of the agency.
'I am pleased that a nation that has changed its economic system make technological advances, make your contribution to space exploration and continue to prosper, "he said.

The Constellation program, which planned to open a base on the Moon as the first stage of the journey to Mars, was canceled by President Obama because of economic considerations, a few months ago, pulled from circulation permanently successful shuttle fleet.

The policy is now further reduced and collaboration with the private sector is already quite advanced in developing their own rockets for flights to LEO.

Pedro Rodriguez estimates that staff cuts are losing the accumulated knowledge of many experts who have gone to other industries for employment, while China can take advantage of technologies already tested and developed computer systems to advance at breakneck speed.
Loss of influence
Some of these developments are the capture and docking of space vehicles that took years to develop and test that China will be testing for the first time this prototype and two more ships that will follow, probably one manned.
'This space race is taking place in a different environment, "the BBC said Dr. Joan Johnson-Freese, a professor of National Security Affairs from the Naval Academy U.S. War in Rhode Island, and specialist China's space program.
"The space race between the U.S. and the Soviet Union was equal. China usufruct Now everything has been learned in the last 50 years, "he said.
Tiangong is only the prelude to his program for a large space station into orbit waiting for the decade of 2020, when it is estimated that the International Space Station, involving U.S., Russia, Europe and other countries fall orbit.
'It will become, de facto, the new international space station, "said the expert on the Chinese space program.

Both Dr. Johnson-Freese and Dr. Rodriguez agreed that the next step will be the trip to the moon and a possible base on that satellite.
"Definitely going to surpass the United States", said Rodriguez.
'I have 35 years in this discipline and see that once the Chinese get to the moon, who will be the leader? "
For his part, Johnson-Freese says that what most regret is that China will begin to offer other countries opportunities for joint landings while the U.S. remains true to the transition from a program that does not have full government funding.
'There would be a great loss of influence and leadership, "he predicted.
Although there is much anticipation at the audacity of the Chinese plans, some see with disappointment, and worry-how in the near future there will be a relay final in first position in space exploration.
Vision and determination
The launch of Tiangong (Heavenly Palace) is not unexpected, even a revolutionary step, but it represents another leap in a very carefully prepared plan on the development of Chinese manned space flight.
